PHILANTHROPY
Our Philanthropy
Alpha Omicron Pi's international philanthropy is Arthritis Research. This cause was chosen because it is the nation's leading cause of disability and it affects mostly women. Alpha Omicron Pi has raised over $1.5 million dollars for grants and research, since our fraternity has adopted Arthritis Research as the international philanthropy. Though Arthritis Research is the international philanthropy, our chapter often support other local or national causes as well.
Each year the Delta Sigma chapter participates in the Walk to Cure Arthritis, the Arthritis Foundation’s annual community fundraising 5K walk event.
Arthritis affects the musculoskeletal system, specifically the joints. Arthritis is not a single disease - it is a term that covers over 100 medical conditions. Arthritis is inflammation of one or more joints. It involves the breakdown of cartilage. Cartilage normally protects a joint, allowing it to move smoothly. Cartilage also absorbs shock when pressure is placed on the joint, such as when you walk. Without the normal amount of cartilage, the bones rub together, causing pain, swelling (inflammation), and stiffness.
Juvenile Arthritis
-Yes, kids can get arthritis too.
-Approximately 294,000 children under the age of 18 are affected by pediatric arthritis and rheumatologic conditions.
-Juvenile arthritis is one of the most common childhood diseases in the United States.
